MJ Online speaks to Lafayette`s Baker

Melbourne-based Lafayette Mining Ltd has had a year to forget.

After contaminated water leaked from a tailings dam at its Rapu Rapu mine in late 2005 production was suspended and extensive remedial work began.

A hefty fine, the linking of the company to a separate cyanide spill near Rapu Rapu Island and pressure from local and international mining pressure groups about its environmental record were all faced against the backdrop of a need to secure the permits necessary to reopen the mine.

A year on from the initial accident Lafayette is now looking forward to the future and the success of one of the region`s most important new mines.
