Shares extend gains, led by Philex on firmer metal prices

MANILA, Philippines — (UPDATE) Shares were firmer midmorning Thursday, extending gains from the previous session, with Philex Mining Corp. advancing following overnight gains in prices of gold and copper.
Fund managers sprucing up portfolios with the year drawing to a close also chased select blue chips, including heavyweights Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and conglomerate Ayala Corp.
At 10:22 a.m. (0222 GMT), the 30-company composite index was up 18.06 points or 0.5 percent at 3,630.24, off a high of 3,646.59. The key index rose 2.3 percent on Wednesday.
