Army tapped to secure mining firm in Zambales

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Philippines — The Army has been tapped to secure a mining subsidiary of a conglomerate involved in a dispute with another mining firm over a foreshore area being proposed as a port site in Sta. Cruz, Zambales.

A memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the Army’s 7th Infantry Division and DMCI Mining Corp. (DMCI-MC) confirmed the tie-up to protect at least 3,700-hectares of ore-rich land.

Major General Juanito Gomez, 7th ID chief, on Wednesday said he signed the document in July 2007. “We have to support mining companies because they make contributions to the economy,” he said.
