TAGUM CITY, Philippines – (UPDATE) Two security guards when killed when suspected communist guerrillas, riding a rented pickup truck, stormed a mining facility owned by a mayor in Compostela Valley province Wednesday, a military official said.
The attack occurred as the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) warned it would step up its offensive against the government and mining companies in the country.
Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Santiago, commander of the Army’s 72nd Infantry Battalion, said the undetermined number of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels swooped down on the gold processing plant of JB Mining in Barangay (village) Olaycon in Monkayo town around 8 a.m.
