A SECURITY guard working for an Australian mining company in the Philippines is likely to face charges over the shooting of an unarmed villager trying to stop the demolition of houses on a mine site.
Senior Filipino police detective Crisanto Jasmin told The Age the guard, working for Melbourne company OceanaGold, shot and injured Emilio Pumihic while two other guards held the villager’s arms.
The shooting has renewed calls from Oxfam Australia for closer monitoring of mining companies in developing countries.
The shooting occurred last Saturday after security guards tried to quell villagers from the remote town of Didipio, 200 kilo metres north of Manila, who were attempting to stop mining company contractors from demolishing several houses.
