A development charity has called on the mining industry and federal parliament to establish an independent complaints mechanism to resolve disputes between overseas communities and Australian miners.
The call by Oxfam Australia follows the shooting of a Philippines villager by a security contractor employed by Melbourne-headquartered OceanaGold Corporation.
Oxfam said the villager’s home was being demolished by the miner and that it was important for Australian companies overseas to respect international human rights laws.
