ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/16 July)— Barangay officials of Kiwalan hosted a mining forum, Tuesday to address the concerns raised by residents of three puroks that are affected by mining operation of a multinational cement corporation here.
“We discussed the impact of the operations of LaFarge Mining in Barangay Kiwalan particulary the directly affected areas of Purok 11, 14 and 16. Residents in these areas have been complaining of road access, sustainability of water source, and their marginalization,” said Kiwalan barangay chair Roderico Dumaug.
Kiwalan is one of 44 barangays of the city located within the mining area of Iligan Cement Corporation (ICC) and Mindanao Portland Cement Corporation (MPCC). Both corporations are owned by a foreign multinational corporation named LaFarge, a cement corporation which claims to be the ‘undisputed leader in the Philippine cement industry’ as stated in their website.
