Gov’t halts mining in Compostela Valley

TAGUM CITY, Philippines — The provincial government of Compostela Valley has ordered a stop to mining operations in a village in Maragusan town, citing geological and environmental hazards.

The Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) last month had recommended the closure of Barangay (Village) Pamintaran from small-scale mining operations after cracks were discovered in the area, which could possibly cause landslides, according to Gov. Arturo Uy.
