Environment chief targets Tampakan deal by end-July

THE DEPARTMENT of Environment and Natural Resources aims to forge a compromise before the end of this month between South Cotabato’s provincial government and the local unit of Switzerland-based Xstrata plc over the open pit mining ban signed into law last June 29.
Environment Secretary Ramon Jesus P. Paje, who also heads the Minerals Development Council, said in a press briefing yesterday that he will meet with officials of South Cotabato and of Sagittarius Mines, Inc (SMI).
